Confieso que perdí los estribos ayer.
I went ballistic yesterday.
I've been watching a good number of videos recently on the growing interest among my fellow Filipinos in learning Spanish.
I love reading the comments and I often can't help but add my two cents.
A sea change in Filipino attitudes is already underway. About Spanish and our past.
It's not merely a change in ideas. It is a change in feeling, often having to do with our vision of the past, a revaluing of the past through a sentiment of meaningful connection, at a personal level, with one's forebears, one's ancestors.
However, the system is very intelligent, very astute. It knows how to appropriate the new that is arising, to ensure its survival, ensure the new winds blowing will not uproot it. Rather, it converts the new into more fertilizer to protect its deeply rooted hold over the people's minds.
Now, I want to make it clear that I have no doubt at all, I feel no fear, I know there is no possibility whatsoever that the men and women of yesterday can keep holding back the progress of time and history, the progress of the human race. They cannot hold back the return of our love for that Past that the white foreigner stole from us.
But I am an ordinary human being and sometimes I lose my patience. I cannot bear to see my people condemned to continue subsisting on a dried-fish + kangkong diet of mediocrity and boredom, served by the "opinion makers" -- the Filipino institutions that in some cases, with the best intentions in the world, persist in flattening out and dulling the awareness of the people with the same old lullabies and litanies of clichés and tired concepts.
Take a look at this video and you will know what I mean.
I was so stunned that I couldn't stop myself from leaving the comment that I will paste below.

This is the conventional look at Filipino
history and culture, from academe.
It gives a lot of weight to the arrival of Islam before the Spanish, Christianization,
anthropological practices, all very well. But these perspectives avoid the core
issues that Latin American historians and thinkers have developed --- the clash
between the indigenous and the medieval
world. Filipino talking heads never penetrate the surface. And this is the problem. It's telling fairy
tales to overgrown children,
entertaining infantilized adults. "We cannot live in the
delusion that we are Hispanic, ...our
legacy is Malay." And with
that, you're supposed to be satisfied.
What about the situation of the country, the
social contradictions, the horrendous disappearance of the middle class, the destruction of the
environment...no, nada, none of those things have
anything to do with anything. They don't mention the American neocolonization. It doesn't matter,
simply. They promote these big names in
academe, with that happy-happy background music, and throw in some who are respected like
Ileto and Zalcita.....but they can only
be window dressing. Man oh man. Hasta
cuándo. Hasta nunca. Quieren cosas
superficiales, y que no cambie nada. Que hablemos español pero que sigamos en
la misma mierda de siempre. Me avergüenzo de todos ustedes. Me avergüenzo de VIBAL. Teniendo tantos
recursos, siguen en lo mismo. Zapatos.

Pues no. Se acabó la miseria.
But no. No more of this poverty.
Tapos na ang karálitaán.
