I work for education and culture, aimed at benefiting the Filipino people, wherever they live now, whatever political, economic, religious, tribal, regional or other racial extraction they may have.
Trabajo en pos de la educación y la cultura, para el beneficio del Pueblo filipino, no importa donde vivan hoy, sin importar sus creencias políticas, religiosas, sea lo que sea su situación económica, su perfil racial o tribal o regional.

I work for the possibility of bonding between human beings who have shared the same colonial past, especially under the Spanish Empire, but certainly under any other past or present Empire.
Trabajo por la posibilidad de que se forjan vínculos entre los seres humanos que han compartido el mismo pasado colonial, especialmente los ex colonizados del Imperio español, pero por supuesto entre todos los seres humanos con una historia de sometimiento bajo cualquier otro poder colonialista, pasado o presente.

This is the most fascinating field of research and study for me:  colonization, histories of colonization, and histories of liberation.
Este es el campo de investigación y estudio que más me fascina:  la colonización, las historias de colonización y las historias de liberación.

Especially of non-white races who have been subjugated by the white race or related hues.
Especialmente, las historias de las razas no-blancas que han sido sometidas por la raza blanca o de matices de blancura.

And before you accuse me of being racist, I am merely describing my interest and point of view.  I am delimiting the area of study with clarity.
Y antes de que me acusen de ser racista, solo estoy describiendo mi interés y punto de vista.  Estoy delimitando el área de estudio con claridad.

Hispanic-Filipino History -- 1521 to 1898 -- is my specific field of study.
La historia Hispanofilipina -- 1521 a 1898 -- es mi campo de estudio específico.

This includes literature.  Hispanic-Filipino literature.  In Spanish, and Tagalog. I do not know other Filipino languages and I am Tagala. 
Incluyo la literatura, la literatura Hispanofilipina, en castellano y tagalo.  No sé otros idiomas filipinos y soy tagala.

Los latinoamericanos (mejicanos, centroamericanos, cubanos, sudamericanos) mayormente no saben nada acerca de los filipinos y nuestra historia. Esta invisibilidad fue el resultado de la neocolonización de Filipinas por EEUU. 
Latin Americans (Mexicans, Central Americans, Cubans, Dominicans, South Americans) mostly know nothing about the Filipinos and our history.  This invisibility was the result of the neocolonization of Filipinas by the U.S.

And so I work to make Hispanic-Filipino history visible for our brothers and sisters, cousins, whom we are so similar to but do not realize it.
Así es que trabajo para que la historia hispanofilipina se vuelva visible para nuestros hermano@s y prim@s, a quienes nos parecemos tanto sin darnos cuenta de ello.

And for Hispanic America and the Caribbean peoples to become visible for the Filipinos.
Y para que los pueblos hispanoamericanos y caribeños se tornen visibles para los filipinos.

I also want Spanish to become one of the official languages of my country again.
También quiero que el español vuelva a ser idioma oficial de mi país.

Spanish was the language of the Filipino elite and this elite did nothing to defend it and disseminate its importance for their own people.  The result was that the administration of Cory Aquino eliminated Spanish from the educational canon in the 1980s.                                  El español fue idioma de la élite filipina y esta élite no hizo nada para defenderlo y difundir su importancia para su propio pueblo.  El resultado fue que el gobierno de Cory Aquino en los 1980 eliminó el castellano del canon. 

Spanish and English are the languages of humanity.  They are not just for the elites.
El español y el inglés son idiomas de la humanidad.  No son solo para las élites.

Both languages have beautiful and profoundly uplifting literatures.
Ambos idiomas poseen literaturas bellas y profundamente inspiradoras.

In this pitiful world that has become so full of violence, alienation, stupidity, informed ignorance, misogyny (hatred of women) and misanthropy (hatred of humanity), LITERATURE IS A FORCE FOR TRANSFORMATION.
En este mundo patético que se ha llenado de violencia, enajenación, estupidez, ignorancia informada, misoginia (aversión a la mujer) y misantropía (aversión al ser humano),      LA LITERATURA ES UNA FUERZA TRANSFORMATIVA.

And to gain access to literature, we must be able to read, and read the original language of that literature.
Y para acceder a la literatura, debemos saber leer, y poder leer en el idioma original de aquella literatura.


My other language, Tagalog, is a beautiful language that we were not allowed to learn and love.
Mi otro idioma, el tagalo, es una hermosa lengua que se nos prohibió aprender y amar.

 The result was that Tagalog, mixed with kitchen English, became the second-class language.
El resultado es que, el tagalo pasó a ser el idioma, mezclado con inglés de cocina, de segunda clase.


  In other words: class division, elitism are imposed on languages and the result is cultural impoverishment.  Because before the advent of U.S. neocolonization, under Spain, Tagalog was a highly developed language, and very much interwoven with Spanish.  It had its own literature, press, theater, and the Filipinos loved it.  They wrote letters in Tagalog, there was music, song lyrics, poetry, books.  Today: NOTHING.
En otras palabras:  el clasismo, el elitismo, se impone sobre los idiomas y el resultado es la pérdida cultural.  Porque antes del régimen usense (de EEUU), bajo España, el tagalo era un idioma muy desarrollado, muy compenetrado con el castellano. Tenía su propia literatura, prensa, teatro, y los filipinos lo amaban.  Escribían cartas en tagalo, había música y canciones, poesía, libros. Hoy, NADA.


Worse:  the same was done to English.  Now it is only well spoken by the elite, by those who can go to private schools and the best universities.
Peor aún:  lo mismo pasó con el inglés.  Hoy solo está hablado correctamente por la élite, por quienes pueden pagar los colegios privados y las mejores universidades. 

Consider this:  In Filipinas starting in the Marcos dictatorship (1970), the middle class practically disappeared, and our society makeup became:  99% poor and 1% obscenely wealthy.
Consideren lo siguiente:  en Filipinas, a partir de la dictadura de Marcos (1970), la clase media prácticamente se desapareció, y la composición de nuestra sociedad pasó a ser:  99% pobres y 1% obscenamente rico.



This is all calculated.  Because do you know what happens, when the educated in a society cannot speak the same language as the uneducated, or the economically deprived, or the semi-literate?
Todo esto está fríamente calculado.  ¿Saben ustedes qué ocurre cuando la gente culta de una sociedad, con un buen nivel educacional, no pueden comunicarse en el mismo idioma con los que no tienen una educación, o los económicamente marginados, o los semi-letrados?

Right:  they no longer have anything in common.  They see each other as alien, as having opposite interests, the haves vs. the have-nots,  the deserving and the undeserving, the privileged and the ones who are just good enough to serve the privileged.  Society is divided, and who profits?  Not even the privileged.  They are also losing their country, but they are too stupid to see it (short-sighted, lazy), they can't connect the dots.
Correcto:  ya no tienen nada en común.  Se ven los unos a los otros como ajenos, con intereses opuestos, los que tienen vs. los que poco o nada tienen, los merecedores y los no-merecedores, los privilegiados y los que solo sirven para empleados de los privilegiados.  Entonces la sociedad queda dividida....y ¿quién gana con esto?  Ni siquiera los privilegiados.  Ellos también están perdiendo su país, pero son demasiado cortos de vista, flojos, y no logran conectar los puntos.

Thus, it will become impossible to bring about change in that society, because the citizens who have the education and culture and the SENSE OF COMMITMENT to want to work for progress, will be IN A VACUUM.
Entonces, será imposible producir un cambio en aquella sociedad, porque los ciudadanos con la educación y cultura y el SENTIDO DE COMPROMISO que los impulse a querer trabajar por el progreso, SE ENCONTRARÁN EN UN VACÍO.  

Ah!  It's not my job to tell you everything. Apenas soy un tábano insignificante.
