A letter from Rizal's mother, Teodora Alonso. (English translation below.)
Translation into Spanish below.

Beloved Son: On the
13th of this month too we had lunch in your Aunty Betang’s house, and on the
14th we slept there because we talked about how you really want to see our
photos.
We made a group
photo of three and sent it to you so you wouldn’t be sad anymore. Since you
haven’t received our letters, despite my bad eyesight I’m writing you now.
I have to tell you that, hopefully, if you aren’t busy, return to the memory of when you were small, you had just learned to read, and together with it you became devoted to the Beloved Virgin, Our Merciful Lady. You were entrusted to her protection, and it seemed miraculous how easy is was for you to learn, the knowledge that you acquired, I recognize this as my debt of gratitude, made possible by the rosaries you prayed, and may we ever remember this. Why did you write in a letter that you don’t consider it a good thing for us to pray in church. I will tell you that since you left here, aside from my prayers for you, I urge very strongly, I entrust you with the support, protection, the adoption of the things I am praying for. And now I will enumerate one by one my debts to God. On June 6th, 1882 Lucía gave birth to a boy, named José. On September 15, 1882 Neneng had a child, named Alfredo. On June 14, 1883 Sisa had a daughter, named María Consolación. On September 3, 1883, it was Olimpia’s turn to have a boy, baptized Aristeo. On 24 November 1883, Lucía had a daughter. Also on the 26th of the same month, Neneng had a daughter too, they haven’t been baptized yet; they’ll be on Sunday. There are many here having babies and losing them, even though the babies were born healthy, there was an outbreak here of cholera, followed by beri-beri, powerful typhoons. But by God’s mercy we seemed to be passed by and braced up. Neneng was robbed, more than 4,000 pesos have been recovered from the thieves, very little is left that must still be recovered. You can see that all of you my children are protected, so help me that our debt may in the end be increased, and that we may see each other and be together---let us give thanks.
Your mother who
desires the well-being of your Soul.
TEODORA ALONSO.
P.S. I’ve given your Uncle Antonio 25 pesos for
your Christmas gift.
