No pensaba escribirte desde que fuiste á
París, pero como aquello ya pasó y porque uno no puede abstenerse por más
tiempo sin descuidar ciertos intereses, vuelvo hoy á reanudar aunque no con
tanta frecuencia, como es de desear, á causa de mis ocupaciones.
Sa umpisá wala akong balak na sumulat sa iyo buhat nang ika'y pumunta sa Paris, pero nangyari na iyon at hindi maaaring umiwas na sumulat nang mas matagal na panahon, sapagkat kinakailangang pag-ingatan ang ilang bagay na mahalaga. Ito ang dahilan na binabalikan co ngayon ang pagsulat, ngunit hindi aco susulat ng madalás, kahit na ito'y kanais-nais, dahil sa aking maraming trabaho.
I wasn't going to write you when you left for Paris, but since it's all water under the bridge now and one cannot continue to keep silent without neglecting certain interests, I am writing again, though not as frequently as I would like because of my many occupations.
Entre las cosas que nos dices en tus
cartas lo primero a que debo contestar es acerca de tu doctorado. ¿Qué cantidad
señalas para esto? Necesito que me contestes a vuelta de correo, a fin de poder
girar a su debido tiempo.
Kabilan sa mga bagay na sinabi mo sa amin sa iyong mga liham, ang kaunahang bagay na dapat cong sagutin ay tungkol sa iyong doktorado. Magkano, isip mo, na kinakailangan para sa ito? Dapat mo acong sagutin sa pabalik, upang mapadala ang halagá sa petsang takdâ.
Among the things you tell us in your letters, the first one I should reply to concerns your doctorate. What amount of money do you indicate for this? I need your answer in the next post to be able to send it on time.
En otra carta dices que es inminente la
guerra entre Francia y Prusia, si coincide la conclusión de tu carrera con las
primeras hostilidades y como dicen que en los campamentos es en donde se
practica mejor la cirujía, pienso que debes ir allá ya fuese como corresponsal
de un periódico, que ya desapareció, ya ingresando en el cuerpo de sanidad y si
se pudiese en el de Estado Mayor, tanto mejor; porque no está por demás el
saber otras cosas y hasta casi esencial, pero hay que presentarse allá como
Filipino y no como Japón, no hay razón para que se avergüenze uno de su
nacionalidad, nos honramos con ser indios, pues éstos sienten y piensan como el resto de los hombres. No
obstante esto, y como distamos del teatro de los acontecimientos, desconozco los verdaderos peligros que pueda correr aquel que se mezcla ó que
lo presencia; tú, que estás alli más cerca puedes medir las consecuencias de
semejan [semejante] paso y si en realidad se corre graves espociones
[exposiciones], yo soy el primero que me opongo pues no quiero que por mi
consejo se aflijan muchas personas. Creo que me has entendido lo suficiente, si
te agrada esta proposición, te facilitaré 200$, además de tu pensión y más si
consigues ó puedas conseguir una plaza en el cuerpo, mejor como decia arriba.

ang mga paunang pag-aaway ay mag-tutugma sa pagtatapos ng iyong pag-aaral, at
dahil sinasabi na sa mga kampo [ospital sa bukid] ay kung saan ang operasyon ay
pinakamahusay na praktikahin, sa palagay ko dapat kang pumunta doon, kung
bilang corresponsal, para sa isang peryodiko na isinará, o sa pamamagitan ng
pagsali sa Health Corps o, kung maaari, at mas mahusay, na sumisilbi sa opisina
ng Chiefs of Staff. Sapagkat hindi walang halagá ang marunong na gumawa ng iba
pang mga bagay; sa katunayan, halos napaka-importante ito, ngunit kailangan

In another letter
you say that war between France and Prussia is imminent. If the initial
hostilities coincide with the conclusion of your studies, and since they say
that in the camps [field hospitals] is where surgery is best employed, I
think you should go there, whether as a news correspondent, for a paper that
already shut down, or by joining the Health Corps or, if possible, and even
better, serving the Chiefs of Staff.
Because it is not superfluous to know how to do other things; in fact,
it’s almost essential, but you have to present yourself there as a Filipino and
not as a Japanese. There is no reason to
be ashamed of one’s nationality, we are honored to be natives, because [natives]
feel and think as all the rest of men do. Notwithstanding this, and since we
are far from the theater of events, I don’t know of the real dangers that those
who get involved or who witness [the war] could risk; you, who are there and
closer, can measure the consequences of such a step, and if in reality the
risks are serious [exposures], I’d be the first to oppose it, since I don’t
wish for others to suffer as a result of my counsel to you. I think you have
understood me well enough. If you agree
with this proposal, I will give you $200 [pesos], in addition to your allowance,
and more, better yet if you get or can get a place in the corps, as I said
above.

Over here [there are] some things happening, that satisfy one's curiosity, rather more than one’s need to know. One should fear everything from these visionaries and meticulous people sticking their noses everywhere, who see things where there’s nothing to see.
