The first thing we ought to
teach a child is to honor with pride his, her mother tongue.
Y cuando hablo de
lengua materna, no me refiero tan solo al español, al aimara, al quechua, al
guaraní, al portugués. Nuestras lenguas
And when I say mother tongue, I
don’t refer solely to Spanish, Aymara, Quechua, Guaraní, Portuguese... our mother tongues are our linguistic
lineages, the language of the home, the language that was cooked in the pots of
our houses. Because there is not just
one Spanish, nor just one Guaraní, nor just one Aymara, nor just one
Portuguese. Because each house, each
barrio, because each mother, is a dialect.
camino.
For this reason, it is urgent to
undo authoritarism when it comes to thinking of language in education. To respect the voice that the child brings
with him, her and teach him, her to love it, is the first step, to then grow it,
display it, make it shine. It is not by
besmirching the word that raised him/her that we will bond it to the river of
language. It is, instead, by celebrating
that tiny fistful of concepts that the child brings at the bottom of his, her pocket
that we can give him, her a voice, and his, her voice can become a path to
journey on.
