Pensando
balde.
No.
nuestro pueblo.

Thinking of Rizal this morning.
He committed a form of suicide. He tried to make Spain see reason
because he knew that separation would be the prelude to a new colonization
(this was already the thesis of his mentor, Padre José Burgos). He saw no
sense in surviving to see that. He would not have wanted to witness the
californication of Filipinas. He would have been a persona non grata for the Yankees,
would have preferred eternal exile. He had risked everything, bet everything,
and he preferred to go, with his message to the future intact:
You will continue to be slaves, under two tyrants: within, the enemies
of culture, of education, of the upliftment of our people; and without, the
enemy of freedom, this time more invisible than the Spanish, yet more
controlling because he will make you love your chains and wear them with
pride.
The proof of your disgrace will be there in plain sight, but you will
remain blind for a hundred years. You will forget us, you will forget that
for which we fought and gave our lives.
However, the evil newly installed in Filipinas will continue to spread
and when it has covered the planet, and the rest of the world begins to
reflect back to you your own initial despoilment, the great experiment of
collective hypnosis, perhaps you will begin to awaken, and it will be a
bitter awakening. Only then will you realize the true sense of my words and
what I gave my life for. Because had I lived, the lie would have triumphed
completely and then, it would have been true that I had lived in vain.
Rizal died in profound peace with his conscience. This is why his pulse was normal seconds
before he was shot. This is why he
wrote: “To die is to repose.”
And for the centuries of centuries he would be, at first, the
precarious flame of a solitary candle, and tomorrow, the blinding strobe
light piercing the total darkness of the Filipino soul. He will be the example against which each
Filipino will have to measure him/herself, and the merciless mirror of God,
in which each deceiver, each dismemberer of corpses, each enemy of the
spirit, will see their true face reflected, in all its hideous pestilential rottenness.
Upon choosing physical death, Rizal chose to be a portal for the
future. The gift of his life is the open possibility of our people’s future
redemption and resurrection. |
