This is actually a post on how English speakers have lost the ability to understand classic literary works because their vocabulary has shrunk so much and it is so important to tether ourselves to the wealth of the past, and to learn how to think. We can't let the connection to history, to the past, to great literature, to be severed.

true. Open an old book like I said and you will see how evident this is. Not only do we have such a more limited vocabulary but also the store of information and literary knowledge is so much diminished. For example, when I read these authors like Carlile or Schiller or anyone really, they knew the Bible backwards and forwards and could quote it from memory, all parts of it. They've all read Dante. They've all read every bit of Shakespeare and so on. There was a really strong tradition, a literary tradition that served as a link reaching far back into the past and was carried forward as a way for people to reason through their present-day condition and state of affairs. The chain was all through reading and they read, they thought, they reasoned and they wrote. And the depth of those men's thoughts like some of the writers that I mentioned in this video can only be grasped and understood through reading their work ourselves but also through reading the works that they read. That we can retain the very basic skills to understand what our forebears wrote is so deeply critical. The past contains a vast amount of the beauty that we have on planet earth and it's all contained in the written word and it is our tether to an incredibly deep well of knowledge. If we ourselves stop reading then not only do we lose that connection but also our own ability to think, read and write for ourselves. And these three activities, just like truth, goodness, and beauty, are all inextricably connected. You lose one and you probably lose the other two.
