I've been listening to the amazing rock classics of Charly García.
He has composed the most incredibly melodic and soul-trembling, spirit-shivering songs over his trajectory spanning over 50 years.
One of the songs I am most thrilled by is
Cerca de la Revolución
The original version:
And here is the tribute to his song recently performed by the Symphonic Orchestra of Santa María in Córdoba, Argentina:
Here are the lyrics:
It's a simple love song with some pithy remarks about revolution. At that time Argentina had been under a military reign of terror that ended when Margaret Thatcher humiliated the dictatorship by whupping their ass in the Falklands War. She was nicknamed "The Malvinas Snatcher". Islas Malvinas is the Spanish equivalent of The Falkland Islands.
Cerca De La Revolucion

¿Por qué no vienes hasta mí? |
Why don’t you come to me? Why can’t I love you? Why don’t you come to me? |
¿Por qué cambias como el sol? |
Why do you change like the sun? What are you so distant? Why don’t you change, like the sun? |
¿Por qué cambias como el sol? |
Why do you change like the sun? Why are you so distant? Why don’t you change like the sun? |
Me siento solo y confundido a la vez |
I feel alone and at the same time confused Psychoanalysts won’t figure it out I don’t know what to say, what more to do Everyone’s crazy and I can’t see you |
Pero, si insisto |
But if I don’t give up I know very well I’ll win you But if I don’t throw in the towel I know full well I’ll win you |
Cerca de la revolución |
Close to the revolution The people ask for blood Close to the revolution |
Yo estoy cantando esta canción |
I’m singing this song That once was hunger I’m singing this song |
Y si mañana es como ayer, otra vez No es solo una cuestión de elecciones |
And if tomorrow is like yesterday, again What was beautiful will be horrible after It’s not just about elections I didn’t choose this world, but I learned to love |
Pero, si insisto |
But if I don’t give up I know without question I’ll win you (I’ll keep trying) But if I don’t give up I know without question you’ll be mine (I’ll keep trying) |
Uh-uh-uh-uh Yo sería tan feliz, tan feliz en el mundo Que moriría, arrodillado a tus pies |
If these words could prove to you If this harmony could help you grow I’d be so happy, so glad in the world That I’d die, kneeling at your feet |
Pero, si insisto |
But if I don’t give up I absolutely know you’ll be mine (I’ll segway) But if I insist I know damn well you’ll be mine (I’ll keep on) |
(Seguiré)
|
But if I keep trying I know damn well I’ll win you (I’ll keep on) |
